Deacon John Michel wrote:

Mike,

I hope that finally I can get someone to outline, step by step, the incensation process. I know when to incense. What I cannot find out is what is the actual program for incensing a person or thing.

  • For example, when the presider or the people are being incensed:
    • How many times is the censer raised and lowered in incensation, and
    • How many times, within each of those movements, are those to be incensed?
    • Is it 3 x 3; or 3 x 2; or 2 x 3, etc.?

I have seen all these movements, and then some, in incensation, yet no one seems to be able to give me a satisfactory answer as to:

  • what is a standard incensation movement, or
  • the standard activity (by the presider or deacon) that meets the expectations of the universal Church.

I hope I am making myself clear and I hope that you can answer this for me once and for all.

Mike replied:

Hi Deacon John,

Not having priestly or deacon training myself, I've forwarded a copy of your question to two priest friends of mine, Fr. Francis and Fr. Ray. If they have time in their busy schedule, I'm sure I will hear back from them with an answer to your question. If I receive a reply, I'll forward it to you.

In the meantime, I would guess that there would be some seminary book that would spell things out but I may be wrong.

Thanks for your patience.

Mike

Deacon John replied:

Mike,

I want to thank you for following up on this seemingly perennial problem. After I sent you my SOS, I actually found my answer in the latest version of the GIRM, Chapter 4, Nos. 276 to 277 near the end of this page.

Thank you again for being so accommodating to a weary deacon.

Deacon John
