Hi, guys —
- Is not telling my parents that I missed Mass a grave
matter . . . meaning a mortal sin?
Thank you,
Anthony

Mike replied:
Hi Anthony,
Thanks for the question.
No, It is not a grave matter.

Ann replied:
Sounds as if the question may have been posed by a youngster
who was supposed to have attended Mass, but instead played
hooky.
I would say that the deception involved in such
a choice to not tell one's parents, under those circumstances,
may very well be a grave sin.

Dear Mike:
This is one of those questions that begs for more information.
- What did this person do
instead of going to Mass?
- i.e., Were they involved in a crime?
- Out with their boyfriend, girlfriend, or gang?
- Is this part of a more serious problem with their parents?
- i.e., the person was grounded or
on house arrest and was only permitted to leave the house to go to Mass?
Mortal Sin is a conscious turning away from God, and quite frankly is
very difficult to commit, but I wouldn't want to give this young person license to
keep secrets from their parents.
Hope this helps!
Fr. Nick
