Hi, guys —

I have a friend who is attending both the Catholic Mass and Missouri Synod Lutheran Services.

She receives the Eucharist at the Mass, and the Lutheran body and blood (as believed by this church). She was raised Catholic but left the Catholic faith for the Lutheran church. She is slowly coming back and learning more about the Catholic Church, which she did not know very well before leaving.

  • How can I best explain that she should not be fully participating in the Catholic Mass and the Lutheran services, and
  • What are the required beliefs for her to come back to the Catholic Church?

David

Mike replied:

Hi David,

Thanks for the question.

I would tell your friend that she is not being honest with some one.

  • What am I talking about?

Communion at both the Catholic Church and, I believe, the Missouri Synod Lutheran church is a sign of unity of belief in what the appropriate churches believe.

If she doesn't believe all that the Catholic Church has revealed (e.g. the Catechism of the Catholic Church, as a minimum, to start.) she shouldn't be receiving Holy Communion at any Catholic Mass.

If she doesn't believe all that the Missouri Synod Lutheran church assumes its members believe, she shouldn't be receiving communion there either.

Here is an excellent posting that will give you similar insight from my colleagues.

Why can Catholics receive in a non-Catholic church. but a non-Catholic cannot receive there?

People can leave the Church for a number of reasons. If she left because someone hurt her by their behavior, I do apologize. What we would say, as Catholics, though is:

We don't leave the bark or truth of Peter because of Judas behavior.

  • When a Protestant becomes a Catholic, they go from believing part of what Christ wishes all men to believe to believing all of what He wishes us to believe.

  • When a Catholic becomes a Protestant, they go from believing all Our Lord wishes them to believing to only part of what He wishes them to believe.

Your obligation is to pray for her and be there to answer any questions she has in a charitable, mature manner.  If you can't answer a question of hers, send her to our site.

Just use the AskUs link.

The Catechism has all the basis beliefs of our faith. She may find this web page helpful too:

Print it out for her!

Hope this helps,

Mike
