Hi, guys —

  • How do you answer people who question your beliefs like why are there saints and beatifications?
  • Are there verses in the Bible that are related to this question?

An acquaintance of mine says that if it is not in the Bible, it doesn't exist.

Please help,

Sue

Mike replied:

Hi, Susie —

You generally answer people like this:

  • by knowing the Teachings of the Church and the Biblical basis for some of our teachings.
  • by reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church so you know what we believe as Catholics.
  • by remembering that the Church came before the Bible.

The Bible was written by Catholics, for Catholics, for use in the Catholic Church.

That's just History 101. A book by Henry Graham called, Where we got the Bible is a good read on the subject.

Before 382 A.D. at the Council of Rome, there was no known set of books we know as the Bible.

  • Would your friend say that before 382 A.D., nobody existed in order to be saved?

Here is a Scriptural defense for some of our teachings. It may help.
