Dear Tim —
It sounds like you had every intention of attending
Mass and did what you could to do so. Not being able
to attend in person, you watched Mass on T.V.
I would say you didn't purposely commit grave sin in
this instance. Whether or not you should go to Confession is
another question. Confession, like the other sacraments
are encounters with Christ so regular Confession
(once a month or even weekly) is a good habit that I highly
recommend, regardless of whether one is aware of
grave sin or not.
Confession is an opportunity for us to leave our
cares and guilt at the foot of the Cross. We don't
want to be scrupulous, but we do want to take inventory
of our lives. Most of the sins we commit, are sins
of omissions, or sins involving our thoughts and
attitudes. Unconfessed, these sins lead to sins of
commission.
In the instance you described, you probably don't
need to go to Confession in order to receive Communion,
but going to Confession after a good examination
of conscience is always a good idea.
