Dear Deirdre,
Thank you for your question.
Struggling with doctrine is natural for all of us
whether we are converts to the faith or cradle Catholics.
Having severe doubts is no reason to walk away from
the one Church Christ founded, but it does take a
degree of humility to remain. At a certain point,
we all must recognize that God is God and we are
not!
We don't know everything, we don't understand everything,
nor can we, in this life.
So the issue in your question boils down to authority.
If you can at least be willing to submit to the Church's
authority, while you continue to study and ask God
to help you to understand, you are neither heretical
or hypocritical.
In this instance, heresy would be defined as the
obstinate denial of truth, not a severe doubt.
If there are specific doctrines that trouble you,
feel free to ask
us for help in understanding them.
If you could give us some background as to your religious
tradition prior to conversion, it would help us explain
Catholic doctrine in a more recognizable paradigm
for you.
God Bless!
John
