Hi, Shawn —
Before the reading of the Gospel,
one or two selections from elsewhere
in Scripture are read,
(two are read on Sundays and special
feast days).
They are taken from the Old Testament,
or from the other books of the New
Testament:
(Acts, the Letters, or Apocalypse).
The proclamation of the Gospel is
reserved to clergy (priest or deacon)
because that is the first part of
the mission they inherited from
the Apostles: to preach the Gospel.
