Hi, guys —

Our parish recently changed priests. When saying Mass, our new priest does not have the congregation recite the Penitential Rite. When I asked him about this, after Mass one Sunday,
he said that reciting the Penitential Rite was optional and saying or singing the Gloria covered us for not saying the Penitential Rite.

  • Is reciting the Penitential Rite optional?

It's my understanding is that the Penitential Rite is an integral part of the Liturgy of the Word in the Mass and therefore should not be omitted.

Jim

John replied:

Hi, Jim —

The Penitential Rite takes more than one form and the Priest has several options.

  • If the Confiteor is said, then the Kyrie takes the short form.
  • If the Confiteor is omitted, then there is a slightly longer version of the Kyrie that is used.

The Gloria doesn't have much to do with it. It is required on Sundays, except on Sundays during certain seasons, like Lent.

John
