Marti Armstrong wrote:

Hi, guys —

A priest who says Mass at our church says, at the consecration of the wine:

Do these things in memory of Me.

instead of:

Do this in memory of Me.

  • Is this a valid consecration or licit consecration of the wine?

Marti

  { Do the words this priest used still establish a valid or licit consecration of the wine at Mass? }

Eric replied:

Hi, Marti —

It's illicit but valid.

For it to be invalid, he would have to say something not equivalent to This is my body and
This is my blood, or have the wrong intention.

Eric

Marti replied:

Eric,

Thank you so much, and God bless you.

I was avoiding the Masses said by the aforementioned priest, a visiting priest who pinch-hits for the priests in our parish, but he said Mass at our church this past Friday.

I approached him after Mass, and asked him if he would consider saying this instead these things at the consecration of the wine. His reply to me was:

This is the way I say the Mass. If you don't like it, you can go to another Mass.

Marti

Mary Ann replied:

Sorry to hear that Marti,

Typical arrogance of the do-it-yourself liturgist.

Mary Ann
