Hi, guys —
I saw something happen in Mass today and was
puzzled by it. While in line to receive
Holy Communion, there was a lady in the other
line ahead of me. She approached the priest
with her hands open, as if she would take
the host in her hands, but instead had some
sort of gold box in her hand. Upon getting
to the priest, he placed a host in the box
and appeared to bless it,
then she receiving Holy Communion on the tongue.
Thanks for any insight.

Can
you explain the gold box I saw ahead of me
in the Communion line at Mass today? }

Jeff,
The only thing I can think of is
this woman may have been commissioned
by the pastor to take the Blessed
Eucharist to the sick, perhaps at
a hospital or a private home.

Hi, Jeff —
I concur with my colleague Paul.
The gold box you saw is a pyx. It
is a small round container used in
Catholic parishes to carry the
consecrated host (The Eucharist),
to the sick, invalid, or those otherwise
unable to come to a church in order
to receive Holy Communion.
At my parish it is done on a regular
basis.
For Extraordinary Ministers
of the Eucharist who make hospital
and similar visitations outside of
Mass there is likely additional training
to that received
for serving at Mass.
Here are what pyx's look
like:
