Hi, guys —

I'm new to the faith.

  • When we genuflect, we are genuflecting to the altar, right?
  • Finally, what is the proper thing to do when you bring the gifts up during the Mass to the priest?

Thanks,

Randy

  { Do we knee to the altar and what is the proper thing to do when we bring the gifts up to the altar? }

John replied:

Welcome to faith, dear brother!

We genuflect to the tabernacle which should be clearly marked by a Sanctuary Lamp which indicates that Our Blessed Lord is present in the Blessed Sacrament.

  • Sometimes, the tabernacle is in a side chapel.
  • Often times, it's on a side altar, and
  • in some Churches, it's still behind the main altar.

In this last case, it would look like you are genuflecting to the altar.

If the tabernacle is off to the side or in a side chapel, you genuflect in the direction of the tabernacle and bow to the Cross behind the main altar when you cross in front of it.

You said:

When you bring up the gifts during the Mass it is customary to bow to the priest as well;
Father will usually bless you. This holds true for any Mass.

Once again, Welcome to Catholic Church. If there are any other questions we can help you with, please write and ask us.
