Hi, guys —

Praise the Lord!

  • Is attending daily Mass against the Bible?
  • Is it a daily reminder of Christ's death?

Jennifer

  { Is attending daily Mass against the Bible and is Mass a daily reminder of Christ's death? }

Mary Ann replied:

Jennifer —

Daily Mass is the perpetual sacrifice of Scripture. It is the Lord in His Supreme Act of worship to the Father, His living obedience, the memorial of His death, which was the full expression of the sacrifice of His will, His obedience.

His eternal self-giving to the Father for us is made present to us so that we may join ourselves to His act of the will. The physical expression of this act of the will was once and forever and is not repeated. Nevertheless, the offering of obedience and the prayer endures and we can become part of it.

That is why we can pray to the Father in Jesus' name, because we become one with Jesus in Baptism and the Eucharist.

Mary Ann

Paul replied:

Hi, Jennifer —

There's nothing in the Bible that would forbid daily Mass.

It's not only a daily reminder of Christ's death as you say, but a daily entering in to His Suffering, Death, and Resurrection.

We don't believe Mass simply reminds us of things, but enables us to be present in, and become greatly affected by, the work of God that wins for us salvation.

Paul

Eric replied:

Jennifer —

2 Corinthians 4:10 may help you resolve this question: The apostle said he was:

10 always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

If the Apostle could say that he was:

always bearing about in [his] body the dying of the Lord Jesus

then surely we can commemorate his death daily.

There is nothing in the Bible that would prohibit reminding ourselves daily of the loving sacrifice that Jesus made for our sins. But also remember, the Mass celebrates His Passion, Death, and Resurrection (the Mystery of Faith), so there is balance.

Eric
