Hi, guys —

I have been struggling with the meaning of life and the saints are not fulfilling my prayers.

  • What saint (should I pray to who) could assist me in deciding the next chapter of my life?

Hi, Elinor —

Thanks for the question.

First, I can really relate to your question. I've been unemployed for over five years on a permanent basis and still can't find work. I've said a St. Joseph novena for employment at least twice with no results.

I think it's important that we don't think of prayer to:

  • Our Blessed Lord, Himself
  • Our Lady, or
  • any other saint . . .

like a coin machine: If I put in my quarters, I will get my petitions answered, though it may take awhile.

We have to keep things in context. We were meant for a specific purpose in life. Prayer helps us discern this purpose. Since, we could never had come into existence, without the Lord's help, and the Lord, Himself, is outside of time, He knows what's best for us and what is not.

Prayer will always be answered, but sometimes, for our own good, the answer to a specific prayer petition is, No.

My advice: Find an adoration chapel where you live and make weekly trips there. Ask the Lord, Himself:

  • What is my purpose in life?
  • Where do you want me to serve in your Church?

I truly think he will put something on your heart and, over time, answer you.

Also, meditate on the obvious in the form of a question:

  • What ministries have I enjoyed at my parish?
  • Have I discovered all the ministries my local parish has to offer or are there others?
  • What do I like to do?
  • What do I like about being a Catholic?

Since it appears you have a devotion to the saints, I'll just recommend my top two:

Ask the Holy Family to help you:

  • bear your crosses and confusions, with patience
  • keep a solid sacramental and prayer life, and
  • guide you in a discernment of where the Lord wants you to serve Him.

Hope this helps,

Mike
