Hi, guys —
I am working as a part time Registered Nurse in a hospital at this time. A full time position will be coming available soon. Unfortunately, the position is a weekend only position. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 7:00am — 7:30pm.
I only get a 1/2 hour lunch and am not allowed to take my 15 minute break with my lunch
(45 minutes) which might give me enough time to attend a local Catholic parish in the area.
They have a chapel in the hospital, but it is very seldom that a priest comes to celebrate Mass.
My husband is on disability and I am the primary support for my family. This job would mean a great deal to us, for our current income as well as our retirement income for the future. I am very worried about not being able to go to Mass on Sunday.
- Would I be committing a mortal sin in accepting this job, knowing I couldn't attend Mass?

Hi, Dawn —
If you have no other option and for serious reasons, you are allowed to take the job, as long as you keep searching for a chance to either get another job or go to Mass on that schedule
(either late Saturday or anytime Sunday up until midnight).
Since Mass obligation does not apply if a person is out of reach of Mass by reason of travel
(even for vacation), it would seem logical. Moreover, according to Canon 1248, #2:
"If participation in the eucharistic celebration becomes impossible because of the absence of a sacred minister or for another grave cause, it is strongly recommended that the faithful take part in a liturgy of the word if such a liturgy is celebrated in a parish church or other sacred place according to the prescripts of the diocesan bishop or that they devote themselves to prayer for a suitable time alone, as a family, or, as the occasion permits, in groups of families."
Often colleges have Mass late on Sunday evenings.
